I’ve recently had many clients ask me, “what is a superbill?”. Here is a brief explanation of what a superbill is and how it may help you in choosing which provider you use for your child.
Sometimes you want your child to receive therapy but your chosen therapist isn’t in-network with your particular insurance company. Although inconvenient, that doesn’t necessarily mean you have to choose a different provider just to stay in-network. You can still work with that provider and after therapy, you can submit a superbill to your insurance company for reimbursement.
Essentially, a Superbill is an itemized list of all services provided to a client. Superbills are different from receipts/invoices because they provide additional information regarding the visit (diagnosis and procedure codes) that are needed to get a claim approved.
Every insurance company has a different process and while you may not get 100% reimbursement in what you paid for your child’s therapy, you will likely get a percentage of what you paid given back to you. Comparing this to working towards meeting your deductible and out-of-pocket max and paying directly while submitting a superbill can be the solution you need to using the therapist you want.
